Two
historic homes are available for tours. The Barns-Brinton
House, was
built in 1714 as the home and tavern of blacksmith
William Barns. The brick English style house retains most
of its original features and is an excellent site for
learning about early 18th century tavern life. The
John Chads House was built in 1725 for John
Chads, the man for whom Chadds Ford was named. The house
was built of fieldstone as a bank house. The original
stone springhouse sits on the property. Most of the
original woodwork and architectural details remain. This
home provides a view into the lifestyle of a well-to-do
Quaker entrepreneur during the early 1700's.
Guides
in colonial garb narrate tours of the houses. Arrangement
can be made to demonstrate early skills such as open
hearth cooking and baking, spinning, weaving, needlework,
etc.
