SCHOOL PROGRAMS

School kids learn craftsSchool Programs for groups of 30 or less take place at the Barns-Brinton House, home and business of William Barns, 18th century tavernkeeper and blacksmith.  Classes of 30 to 60 visit the John Chads House, owned by the man for whom Chadds Ford was named. At both site guides in colonial garb will take schoolchildren back in time to experience life in the 1720’s.

They will participate in cooking and baking on the open hearth (and tasting, of course). They will try their hands at 18th century decorative art forms such as stencilling and at housewifery skills such as spinning. They might play marbles, make marble pouches, or be treated to a musket loading demonstration.

A guided tour of the houses, focusing on the domestic side of colonial life, will use hands-on artifacts. Emphasis is placed on learning about daily chores, foods, clothing, the importance of taverns and inns to colonial travelers, and the treatment and education of children in the early 18th century.
