The Chadds Ford Historical Society (CFHS) will host its 11th Annual Plein Air event called “Paint Out Chadds Ford” from Thursday, February 7th through Saturday, February 9th, 2019.
Paint Out Chadds Ford celebrates local art and artists, and harkens back into time when early American illustrators and painters such as Frank Schoonover, Howard Pyle, Bayard Berndt, and N.C. Wyeth were inspired by the beauty of our region and painted outdoors en plein air.
The Historical Society works with the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painting Association (MAPAPA) to plan the juried event, one of the few plein air events in the country to be held in the winter. The event is especially popular with plein air artists interested in painting historic farms and structures in the Brandywine Valley.
In the past, selected artists have enjoyed the challenge of painting outdoors in the winter as well as meeting new audiences for their work during the Artists Reception and month-long exhibition.
In addition to the Society’s two colonial structures – the Barns Brinton House, John Chads House – participants will have the opportunity to paint at several area farms important to the Battle of the Brandywine in 1777 including Osborne Hill Farm and Thornbury Farm. Both farms have historic stone homesteads and barns, scenic farm fields and pastures.
Artists will also have access to several private properties and nature trails along the Brandywine as well as outdoor painting at Kuerner Farm including the lower level of the barn where the late Andrew Wyeth painted many of his iconic works. The farm is owned and managed by the Brandywine River Museum. Artists will also have permission to paint at the museum’s extensive grounds, as well in the museum’s indoor lobby areas overlooking the Brandywine. A map showing the location and address of available properties will be provided to artists at registration.
All participants must submit a “jurying” application (available here) and are required to have either a web site or social media site where their work can be reviewed by the jury committee. The application fee is $10. Up to 35 artists will be selected for “Paint Out Chadds Ford” and will be notified of their acceptance via email by January 25th, 2019.
The deadline for the jurying application is January 18th, 2019. Applications can be emailed, mailed, or dropped off at CFHS office in the Barn Visitor Center.
Participating artists are welcome to paint all three days (Feb. 7, 8, or 9th) or one or two days as long as they drop off their finished framed paintings at the CFHS Barn Visitors Center by 3:30 p.m., Saturday, February 9th, 2019.
The cost of participating in the three-day event is $50. Members of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painting Association (MAPAPA) pay $30.
