Two Armies Descend Upon Chadds Ford

Population figures from the 1790 census reveal that about 2,391 people lived in the area where the battle was fought. This area stretches from the town of Kennett Square east to today’s Route 202 and north to Thornbury and Westtown Townships. During the Battle of Brandywine, an estimated 29,000 troops invaded the quiet countryside, roughly 12 soldiers for every resident.

Population
The 1790 population figures suggest the number of people who might have been affected by, both before and for years after, the one-day Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777.
