Springdale Farm

Springdale Farm

(c.1748/1836)
Hillendale Road, near its intersection with Hickory Hill Road
Pennsbury Township
Private Home

The eastern section of this stone house is the earliest part, built sometime before 1748. The larger, more formal part of the house, also built of stone believed to have been quarried on the property, was added in 1836. The property has been in the Mendenhall family for well over 250 years. The family has a long history of serving the community and was active in the abolitionist movement of the 1850s. During the Battle of Brandywine, the British baggage train marched past the property, along Hillendale Road, enroute to Chads’ Ford.
