Gideon Gilpin's house served as the quarters for the Marquis de LaFayette prior to the Battle. The young French volunteer saw his first military action at Brandywine when he served with General Washington. After the Battle, his host's property was plundered by foraging soldiers. The claim for losses filed by Gilpin provides insight into the appearance of this prosperous farm at the time of the Battle. When General LaFayette returned to America on his triumphal tour of the Brandywine Battlefield in 1824, he greeted Gideon, than an old man, at his home. Today, the house has been restored and looks much as it did in 1777. It is open for visitation when Brandywine Battlefield Park is open.
