The George Gilpin House/Howe's Headquarters |

(1754/c.1811/c.1850) This two story house, built by George Gilpin, was added onto twice, about 1811 and 1850. The house is significant in that it became the headquarters for the British General Sir William Howe for five days following the defeat of the Continentals, from September 11th to 16th. Howe himself is said to have occupied the northwest bedroom where the original floors, now boarded over, were stained with blood. Here, Howe received Dr. Benjamin Rush who came as an American doctor to help wounded British soldiers. |
