Brandywine Battlefield: The Road to Recognition

Brandywine Battlefield: The Road to Recognition. Open May 18 to Dec. 1, 2012.
On hot, humid September 11th in 1777, 26,000 soldiers met here in the largest land battle of the Revolutionary War. For many years the site was all but forgotten but in the 20th century efforts began
in earnest to protect it. Probably the greatest single educator about the battle and advocator for preservation of the site was local historian Chris Sanderson (1882 -
1966), who took his message to any
and all that would listen.
The exhibit will focus on the efforts to preserve the battlefield site. The road has been long and winding but today the Battlefield is a National Historic Landmark with three public parks and
numerous scenic vistas. But this is not the end of the story as there are still lands to be preserved and new generations to be made aware of the significance of the battle.
