Sugar & Currency Acts passed by Parliament

1765

Stamp Act passed by Parliament. This was a tax on all paper documents produced, including wills, deeds, and newspapers. Sons of Liberty formed.

1766

March - Stamp Act repealed by Parliament but Declaratory Act was issued, asserting Parliament's right to tax Americans in all cases.

1767

Townshend Acts passed, taxing trade goods like paper, glass, and tea on items imported into the colonies from Britain, not from foreign countries. Thereafter, the Sons of Liberty and other leaders urged Americans to boycott British products. Women joined this effort by making homespun cloth, hoping to end the colonies' dependence on English cloth. Many colonists stopped drinking tea, substituting coffee or herbal tea instead.
