| The World of Elizabeth Chads
|
Elizabeth Richardson Chads was born in West Whiteland Township Pennsylvania, in 1710, the daughter of Katherine and Isaac Richardson. She married John Chads in 1729 at Goshen Monthly Meeting (she was 19, John was 32). John’s will provided her with 30 pounds and 40 acres on which the house stood, together with their household goods and furnishings, plow, the best and first choice of livestock, hay and corn in the barn and ground, plus 35 pounds per year paid every 6 months and sufficient fire-wood . . . hauled to her door, until her death. She was listed as an overseer at Birmingham Meeting after John’s death in 1760. During the Battle of Brandywine Elizabeth reportedly remained in house. A diary records that she hid her silver spoons in her pocket. The house was in the direct line of fire. Elizabeth Chads died in 1790 at 80 years of age.
