Welcome to the Chadds Ford Historical Society |
|
The Chadds Ford Historical Society Barn is the headquarters of the Historical Society. Ground was broken for the building on November 1, 1990; it was dedicated the following November during a three-day celebration. The Barn is the culmination of literally years of planning and effort on the part of many members of the society. The Historical Society's need for a headquarters grew as its activities and programs did. The Barn now serves as the Society's office, museum, library, meeting room, and orientation room for visitors to the Brandywine Valley, as well as the staging area for Chadds Ford Days, The Great Pumpkin Carve, and other special events throughout the year. Designed to look like an 18th century Pennsylvania bank barn with two additions, the structure is built on the footprint of William Hoffman's dairy barn. In keeping with the c. 1725 John Chads' House and Springhouse, the building's facade is local fieldstone and frame to blend in with is setting along the Brandywine. The barn-like structure was designed by John Milner Architects, Inc., a nationally known historic preservation architectural firm now located in Chadds Ford. It was John Milner who, early in his career, directed the restoration and preservation of both the John Chads' House and the Barns-Brinton House. Walk around the exterior of the building and take note of the fine stonework in the Barn's piers and the handsome board and batten facade. When the Barn is open, visitors enjoy the view from the large picture window that overlooks the tree-fringed meadow where Chadds Ford Days takes place. You will also want to see "Sharing the Spirit," the Historical Society's new video. It gives you an inside look at the Society's two historic restorations and a glimpse of our calendar of special events. Visit often to take advantage of our library of local history and books on 18th century life and to see the latest display in our museum room. The Barn is open weekends May through September, 1 to 5 p.m., and for special events. Office hours are M - F, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. |
