Battle of Brandywine at Chadds Ford: The Wargame
On September 11, 1777, General Sir William Howe attacked the defending Americans under
General George Washington at Brandywine Creek. Washington, expecting a frontal attack, had
concentrated his forces near Chadds’, Brinton’s and Jones’ Fords, on the road linking Baltimore
to Philadelphia.
Howe spilt his 18,000 British and German army into a holding force, under Lieutenant General
von Knyphausen, along with Howe’s division marching to the north in order to flank the
American right.
The miniatures wargame, that game masters Tim Wilson and Jim McGaughey will be
recreating, uses figures painted to represent the participants fighting over a table-top model of
the terrain that was present in September 1777.
Movement of the figures is accomplished by using dice throws and tape measures. Combat is
resolved also using dice to model the random luck of combat and morale. Rules of the game
will be explained. The rules used, British Grenadier, were written by a well-known published
author of American Revolutionary War and other military works.
Come join in the fun and play the game for either the Crown or Patriot forces. The game will
start around 11:00am and last approximately four to five hours. Children are welcome with an
accompanying playing adult.
